The "Project Nightcrawler / Project Night Voyager," ongoing since 2020, continues to focus on the geographical conditions of the volcanic archipelago off the northern coast of Taiwan and the Datun Volcanic Group. It also delves into the discourse of ufology and explores how it intersects with local supernatural narratives. This investigation aims to understand how long-term, site-specific explorations by the team shape shared experiences and foster alternative forms of knowledge. Moreover, it seeks to examine the potential for events such as "night-crawling," "night-voyaging," "overnight camping," and "night discussions" to be replicated in different locations.

Concurrently, by participating extensively in night expeditions around the northern Taiwan volcanic archipelago, this project brings together members from diverse academic backgrounds. It capitalizes on the knowledge derived from on-site experiences and the exploration of obscure paths, contributing significantly to discussions within ufology, the history of science, and national park studies. This convergence of geographical knowledge with local science fiction narratives, all within the physical landscapes traversed, expands the perceptual boundaries of both internal and external spatial performances. Ultimately, this initiative promotes the practice of "geo-art."

IEngineering of Volcano Detonating

“Engineering of Volcano Detonating” is an artist group formed by Liang Ting-Yu, Hsu Po-Yen, Lu Chun-Chan, Lu Guan-Hong in 2016. Starting from 2018, the group undertook the project Flaming Mountains, a concatenation of corporeal intervention and field surveys into volcanic craters. Deriving from the concept of “neg-geography” developed in 2019 by the group, they intend to explore the practice of geo-art in the form of knowledge production and social performance between science and non-science, through the communities and historical narratives of the Datun Volcanic Group and the volcanic islands in the open sea area in Northern Taiwan. Their artistic practice continues to attend to the relationship between volcanoes, cities, and human beings with a focus on the possibilities for intellectual exchanges and collaborations in production and performances about spirituality, Ufology and volcanic science.

Recent exhibitions and presentations include “Signals: CREATORS 2020–21” (2021, Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (C-LAB)), “2022 International Conference on Science Communication and Literacy” (2021, Shih Hsin University), “Cross-Straits Ethnic Literatures Symposium” (2021, Chinese Culture University), “Annual Chinese Geography Symposium and Academic Seminar” (2021, National Changhua University of Education), “National Taiwan University Department of Geography Online Workshop and Presentation on Geographical Issues by Class of Humanities” (2021, National Taiwan University), “International Symposium on Media and Environment” (2019, Fu Jen Catholic University), “Conference on Environment and the World” (2019, National Kaohsiung Normal University), “Annual Meeting of the Geographical Society of China—The Advancement and Application of Geography” (2018, The Geographical Society of China), Flaming Mountains (2018, Air-drop Taiwan Forum, ET@T), Engineering of Volcano Detonating (2016, URS27M). The group received the “Kaohsiung Awards” Merit award in the category of interdisciplinary art projects (2022, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts) and the “CREATORS Creation/Research Support Project” (2020-2022, C-LAB).
